How to implement the List-Unsubscribe header

The List-Unsubscribe header is an optional email header you can add to your messages. It allows subscribers to see an unsubscribe button they can click if they would like to automatically stop receiving your email.

There are two versions of the List-Unsubscribe header:

  • The mailto: version sends the unsubscribe request to you through email.
  • The http: version sends the subscriber to a web page where they can unsubscribe.

Add the List-Unsubscribe email header as shown below. We recommend you at least use the mailto: unsusbcribe method.

Since the List-Unsubscribe header option is an automated process, you shouldn’t use a URL that requires the subscriber to take further action. Also, you shouldn’t require the subscriber to enter a username or password, or select a checkbox in order to unsubscribe.

List-Unsubscribe email header example

From: <>
To: <>
Subject: <subject line>
Date: Fri, 17 Jul 2015 07:04:37 -0700
List-Unsubscribe: <mailto: emailAddress>, <unsubscribe URL >

If needed you can specify a subject line for the mailto: method. For example, you can include "unsubscribe" in the subject line, which might be similar to the way you would instruct subscribers to reply with a subject line that reads "unsubscribe" as an alternative method for unsubscribing.

List-Unsubscribe: <mailto: emailAddress?subject=unsubscribe>, <unsubscribe URL >
