What is back-off?

Back-off is the process of decreasing the volume of email being sent and/or increasing the length of time between retries when email traffic from an IP address is throttled by a mailbox provider. When a mailbox provider throttles email from a sender, they usually send soft bounce messages back to the sender indicating that emails are being throttled.
