What is a rate limit?

A rate limit is a maximum volume of email an Internet Service Provider allows to be received from a sender in order to manage its resources and to help prevent spam. A limit may be enforced per SMTP connection or for a time period (e.g. per hour or per day). Exceeding rate limits may result in rate limiting (i.e. throttling) and can contribute to a poor sending reputation.
